What is a Domain Name?

Your domain name is your address on the internet. Here is how domains work, what extensions to choose, and how to protect your brand online.

A domain name is your website name — the address people type into a browser to find you. Just as every house has a street address, every website has a domain name that identifies where it lives on the internet.

For example, synohost.com is a domain name. The synohost part is the name you choose, and .com is the extension (also called a top-level domain, or TLD).

How domain names work

Behind every domain name is a directory called DNS — the Domain Name System. DNS translates the name people remember into the numeric address of the server that holds your website. You never have to see the numbers; the system handles it.

When you register a domain, you are renting the right to use that name for a period of time, usually one year. You do not buy it outright. As long as you renew it, the name stays yours.

Choosing the right extension

The extension you pick affects how people perceive your business:

  • .com — the most recognised extension worldwide. Ideal for almost any business.
  • .net and .org — often used by technology companies, networks and organisations.
  • .biz, .info and newer extensions — useful when your preferred name is already taken.

We currently register international extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .me, .us, .cc and .ws.

What makes a good domain name?

A good domain name is:

  • Short and easy to spell — avoid long strings of words.
  • Memorable — if you have to explain it twice, it is too complicated.
  • Free of hyphens and numbers where possible — they cause confusion when spoken aloud.
  • Aligned with your brand — your business name is usually the safest choice.

Avoid names that are too close to a well-known trademark. A cheap domain is not worth a legal problem.

Protect your domain

Two simple habits keep your domain safe:

  1. Turn on automatic renewal so you never lose the name by accident.
  2. Enable Whois privacy (ID Protection) to keep your personal contact details out of public databases.

At SynoHost, domain registration starts from RM55 per year, with free DNS management and optional ID protection. If you need help choosing a name, our team is happy to advise.
