Choosing a domain name on a laptop

You can use a word or phrase as a domain name. If the domain is for a company, you might want to put your company name in the domain. This makes it easier for customers to find you and remember you.

But a good domain is more than a name. It is the first impression of your brand, a line on your business card and a link in every email you send.

Start with your business name

The simplest and usually best choice is your business name followed by .com or .net. If your company is called Cemerlang Trading, try cemerlangtrading.com.

Avoid abbreviations that only make sense to you. If customers already search for your full name, use it.

Keep it short and speakable

A domain should be easy to say over the phone and easy to type after hearing it once. Test it by reading it aloud to a friend:

  • Avoid hyphens: cemerlang-trading.com is easy to mishear.
  • Avoid numbers: “two” versus “2” causes confusion.
  • Avoid unusual spellings: they cost you repeat visitors.

Think about SEO — but do not obsess

Keywords in a domain can help slightly, but they are not a ranking shortcut. A memorable brand name will outperform a keyword-stuffed domain over time.

If your preferred .com is taken, .net, .org and .info are solid alternatives. Combine the name with clear page titles, helpful content and a fast website for the best results.

Check before you commit

Before registering, do three quick checks:

  1. Check availability with our domain checker.
  2. Search the name to see whether another business is already using it.
  3. Check social handles so your brand is consistent across platforms.

Also search for trademarks in Malaysia. A domain that infringes on an existing trademark can be taken away, no matter how much you paid for it.

Protect the name you choose

Once you have a domain:

  • Register the closest variations (.com, .net, .org) if budget allows.
  • Enable auto-renewal.
  • Turn on Whois privacy.
  • Keep the login details in a password manager.
